"Lim Am" in Hakka refers to the time just before nightfall when daylight gradually fades. It captures a unique and poetic moment of the day: the sky sometimes reflects hues of pale yellow or deep crimson, and people rush home from outside, yearning for the warmth of belonging or the comforting aroma of home-cooked meals. This longing for home and warmth forms the emotional core of the artwork and serves as a response to the beautiful, fleeting moments in everyday life.

The character “塑” holds a dual meaning. It refers to plastic, a widely used material in modern society that poses environmental challenges, while also symbolizing shaping or molding. Through the hands-on act of creation, it transforms into an expressive and vibrant form of art.

Illuminating Twilight uses recycled plastic bags as regenerative materials, combined with metal wire and natural elements, to construct small houses of varying heights—resembling early Hakka settlements nestled in the mountains. The work explores relationships between people, home, and nature. The houses use natural materials for the base and roofing, while their shapes are formed using aluminum wire. Recycled plastic bags are cut into translucent strips to color both the interior and exterior of the houses, allowing light to filter through the plastic and create warm, gentle variations, thus reimagining the beauty of twilight.

This creation continues the concept of the 2020 “Hakka Nest,” using the metaphor of the umbilical cord/expectation to symbolize the connection and inheritance between the old and the new. It invites intergenerational or family co-creation, using art as a voice to foster dialogue and promote greater understanding and inclusivity through the creative process. The recycled plastic materials used in the piece are collected, organized, and cut into artistic elements such as light strips and light bands. These materials carry memories and emotions from the past, woven into the structure of the small houses to give them new life, while conveying the sustainable spirit of the Hakka culture—cherishing and valuing materials.

Through the interplay of light, shadow, and materials, Illuminating Twilight gently narrates stories of home, environment, and the passage of time. The work re-examines the fusion of tradition and modernity, transforming the approaching darkness of twilight into a soft, radiant glow filled with hope.
